“There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophy.
Our own brain, our own heart is our temple: the philosophy is kindness.” ~ Dalai Lama
What is Trauma-Sensitive Yoga?
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning union of body, mind and spirit.
Metta is a Pali word meaning loving-kindness.
Trauma-sensitive yoga embraces the philosophy of loving-kindness and teaches a practice of yoga that is gentle, inviting of exploration, mindful, safe, and encourages autonomy.
Classes are designed for both beginners and advanced students, for those who have never explored yoga at all and for those who thought they never could do yoga. Classes include breathing techniques (pranayama), ways to steady and calm the mind (meditation), posture (asanas) and healing hand gestures (mudras). In particular, classes are designed to help regulate heart rate variability (HRV), a biological marker that indicates our heart health and our ability to regulate responses to stress.
Well-regulated people have robust HRV, making them able to have good control over their impulses and emotions. People who are easily thrown off balance may tend to have low HRV, and are more susceptible to the impacts of stress. They may be more vulnerable to such illnesses as depression, anxiety, heart disease and cancer.
Nancy Eaton, both a nurse and psychotherapist, has had a long time practice of yoga and meditation, finding both very beneficial personally and professionally. Her teaching style is gentle, paced slowly, light and welcoming. Classes, workshops and individual sessions are available on Cape Cod.
